[livejournal.com profile] kit_ping posted a meme in she wrote about five topics that someone picked because they associate them with her, and then offered to pick five things for other people. So here are the my explanations of five things [livejournal.com profile] kit_ping associates with me. (Comment if you'd like five things for you to write about, I guess.)

travel )activism )vegetarianism )college )murder mystery parties (with bonus pictures!) )

I used to love Urban Dictionary; it was a great resource for figuring out newfangled slang that kids these days use. Now, of course, it is a cesspool of stupid injokes, misspelled. So this is a good meme for chronicling its badness:

One of my favorite memes is going around again, so I'm yet again joining in. :-)

Here are lyrics from the first 25 songs that came up on my iPod. (OK, I cheated -- if the same band came up more than once or twice I skipped their later songs.)

Read the lyrics, guess the song. No Googling! )

I don't usually post webquizzes, but if ever an OKCupid personality quiz were to appeal to my readership, I think this would be the one:

Which dead language are you?

I scored Akkadian, "a blend of the incomprehensible symbols of the Sumerians with the unwritable sounds of the early Semitic peoples," i.e. "a schizoid mess." "However," it says, "crazy as you are, you're much loved and appreciated, and remain actively in use by records keepers long after schools have switched to other languages."

[livejournal.com profile] syd___ asked about three of my interests and three of my userpics. Here are my responses.

If you leave a comment on this entry, I will then ask you to explain three of YOUR interests and userpics.

By popular demand, here are the funniest/cleverest/best answers to the Marjorie quiz meme. Don't click if you still plan to do the quiz. :-)

Every few months I get sick of the music I've been listening to, and start listening to almost completely different music. That means it's time for another lyrics quiz, like the ones I did in Feb. 2005 and April 2006.

Here are my most-listened-to songs of the last couple months. Can you identify them from the posted lyrics?

No cheating and Googling lyrics! (Or checking my last.fm page!)

I'm stealing this one from chrisamaphone.

I somehow forgot it was New Year's Eve until late this morning, but I guess it's not too late for some (computer-generated) resolutions:

In 2007, qatar resolves to...
Keep my sufism clean.
Admit my true feelings to underpope.
Lose ten languages by March.
Give up human rights.
Volunteer to spend time with my dogs.
Give some hippies to charity.
Get your own New Year's Resolutions:

Um, underpope? ... I guess we'd better talk. ;-)

because everybody else is doing it... Here's the first sentence or two from the first post I wrote each month in 2006.

January: Happy New Year, everyone! Justin's suggestion of an Oz-themed gingerbread house turns out to have been prescient, as Humboldt County has been hit by a big storm with hurricane-force winds.

February: "We like him [Clinton]. All Arabs like him. But I hate George Bush and all Arabs hate him."

March: There are two interesting conferences going on in Doha right now. One is on human rights in the Arab world; the other is on women in the Arab world.

April: Happiness is over 200 new posts on my LJ friends page.

May: This week, Qatar's National Human Rights Committee released their first major report, which is shockingly candid about human rights abuses in Qatar -- abuses which the report warns "impair the reputation of the State at the international level."

June: Sheikh Jassem Al-Mutawah explains the difference between men and women, using modern computer software.

July: Last night we got an e-mail from a colleague telling us that one of our students, Fahad Al-Jefairi, was killed yesterday in a car accident in Saudi.

August: The publication that's printing my article requested pictures of the authors.

September: This morning's Peninsula reports that 764 expatriates lost their jobs last year due to Qatarization.

October: This makes for a very boring LJ entry, but I think it bears saying anyway: I am really quite happy.

November: The Doha Debate I attended earlier this week will be broadcast on BBC World this weekend at the following times:

December: Today marks the beginning of the Asian Games, for which Doha has been gearing up for literally years.

(Has anyone else noticed that I tend to do random music memes when I'm procrastinating on writing a post of substance, e.g. a writeup of our vacation in France?)

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool..

Many of these turned out pretty amusingly appropriate.

Opening Credits:Radiohead - No Surprises
Waking Up:Beatles - Across the Universe
First Day At School:Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
Falling In Love:Andrew Lloyd Weber - Another Suitcase in Another Hall [oh dear!]
Fight Song:Paula Cole - Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?
Breaking Up:Barenaked Ladies - One Week [which is about a breakup]
Prom:Dido - My Lover’s Gone [oh dear again!]
Life's OK:Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats [the song from the lovely bouncy-ball Bravia ad]
Mental Breakdown:Dido - Isobel [which is about a mental breakdown]
Driving:Fastball - The Way [which is precisely about driving]
Flashback:They Might Be Giants - Why Must I Be Sad?
Getting Back Together:REM - Try Not to Breathe [this really doesn't bode well]
Birth of Child:Arctic Monkeys - I Bet that You Look Good on the Dancefloor
Wedding [why does this come after birth of child?]:They Might Be Giants - Particle Man
Final Battle:Green Day - American Idiot
Death Scene:Decemberists - Eli the Barrow Boy [which is indeed about a death scene]
Funeral Song:Tori Amos - Silent All These Years [hmm. yes.]
End Credits:Simon & Garfunkel - Somewhere They Can’t Find Me
