Last weekend was midsemester break, so I took off to Oman with my friends Jon and Rosemary.
Considering it's another Gulf country, a single hour's flight away, Oman is startlingly different from Qatar. Its geography is very different: it's got mountains and canyons and wadis and oases. Its history is very different: longer and more interesting, including a period as an imperial power. Its religious tradition is very different: it practices Ibadhi Islam, which is neither Sunni nor Shia. Its people are very different: they're not as wealthy as Qataris, so they hold more everyday jobs like driving taxis and selling vegetables. All of this makes it a very refreshing weekend getaway.
