Do note what Item #2 is all about:... a model new democracy, a self-supporting oil industry or a society in which the majority of people are free from serious security or economic challenges.... In my eyes, it is sort of telling, that of all the issues, they mention this one. I guess the USA will have to continue supporting THIS venture at least. Also if the government can STILL [this month] be stunned by their closest Iraqi allies, "the Shiites' request this month for autonomy to be guaranteed in the constitution" then they have a WHOLE lot more 'Unreality' to lose...
David Phillips has a different point of view. He was a State Dept. planner and thinks that a lot of these goals were achievable, but required more commitment and more things done right the first time. If you're interested I can send you Eliot Cohen's comments too (a military historian and war supporter whose son is now a Marine in Iraq!) Of course, you should remember that in March the Independent was asking "Was Bush Right After All?" I don't think this is near played out yet. But I no longer expect to see what I was hoping for.
Ouch!
