Maybe this is one of those cool webpages everyone but me already knew about, but...

The yakuza boss in the Japanese cop show I'm watching just absentmindedly whistled a tune I felt I should know, and it was bugging me that I couldn't place it.

I thought to myself, hey, don't we live in the future? Shouldn't there be some kind of cool search engine for music by now? Turns out yes: Midomi.com (and some other websites like it) can record you humming a piece of music for about 10 seconds and then tell you what it is!

And sure enough, it figured it out: the yakuza boss was whistling the theme from the Godfather. Nice.

Hmph. It's doing nothing to get me near the piece of classical music I was looking for over the weekend. I suppose it would have helped if I had heard it since elementary school, and thus knew more than a few seconds, but...

I just tried it with a Mozart piece, and it totally failed.

What sucks is I can't tell it *which* Mozart piece it seems to be missing. :-p

But yay, awesome technology: seems to work better than previous things I've tried.

I tried the two tunes I always hum while taking a shower. I know what one is but was hoping to discover the other. It failed on both.

Then I tried it on some other. It got Bridge Voer Troubled. No Prob. It got White Cliffs of Dover (It can get some oldies.

What blew my mind was humming Joe Hill. It came up with a couple different Japanese women singers singing the tune. i wonder what the song is they are singing.

I'm pretty sure they're singing in Chinese, not Japanese, and Andrew says "乔黑尔" is just "Joe Hill" transliterated! Is China a fan of the Wobblies???
