Fatawa of the day
Apr. 17th, 2006 06:06 pmI knew that the Sunnah -- the set of traditions based on Muhammad's life and teachings -- encompasses every aspect of life, but this one took me by surprise: the Sunnah has advice on sleeping positions.
According to hadith, a good Muslim ought to sleep on his right side, and definitely not on his stomach. Various websites I just consulted on this topic suggest various reasons that sleeping on one's stomach is haram. It may be because it's unhealthy, because it "may strengthen [one's] sexual urge," (source) or, my personal favorite, because Shaitan sleeps on his stomach.
I didn't know Shaitan sleeps at all!
However, this isn't the fatwa that made the news today. The fatwa that made the news is that it is permissible for boys and girls to chat online. Woo-hoo!
