Since lots of people have been asking: things are going well here in Pittsburgh. I'm here for a symposium on transcultural communication, involving ... well, I just wrote out the whole list, but it's pretty boring, so I'll just say: all the English-type faculty and staff involved in intercultural communication, both here and in Doha.

I'm learning a TON and, in the process, gaining great respect for our colleagues on this campus. I can imagine us making a lot of changes in response to what we're learning, which is a nice feeling. My only disappointment is that we didn't make these connections with them earlier.

It's also nice just to be in Pittsburgh again. I checked out as many library books as the Carnegie library would let me, largely on Judaism and other topics not easy to find in Qatar. I'm rereading a bunch of my own books on religion that I missed. I'm playing the piano a lot.

Yesterday I went down to Frick Park in the evening, where Leland was playing in an Ultimate Frisbee game. It was really nice just so sit on a LAWN (yay!) under TREES (yay!) and play with a surprisingly outgoing little Sheltie whose family was also watching the game (yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss my puppies). Then I came home and hung out with one of my coworkers for a while, which was really nice as she's spending the summer here in the U.S. so I haven't seen her for a while.

This is quickly degenerating into the worst kind of "What I Did Today" Livejournal post, so I'll stop here before I bore us all to death! Suffice it to say that it's nice being in Pittsburgh, the jet lag is not so bad, I miss Justin, but I'm incredibly glad I was able to come to this conference.

OK, here's the list of things that struck me as weird or at least un-Qatari when I flew back in last night. However, I now have to preface it by saying that the MOST un-Qatari thing to happen since I got back was that I got HIT ON on the way home from church. That would never happen in Qatar. Although the dude's name was Omar.....

So, here are the observations I wrote down about being back in the West after 10 months in the Gulf.

This is way long. )
