Just to get the envy out of the way: I'm typing this on my iPod while lying in a bamboo hammock on the porch of my rustic bungalow on a small island in Thailand. How did I ever get this lucky in life?

We flew in to Ko Samui last night, which by the way is the world's cutest airport -- open air, with a grass roof. I love the way buildings here are made, with little distinction between outside and inside (except for where you wear shoes).

On the way to our bungalow last night we passes a cafe called Sweeny Todd's. Must remember to tell Mohamad.

Justin saved us from a rookie travel mistake i made last night -- I set my cell phone alarm without checking that I'd changed time zones. Happily, justin woke up 5 mins after the alarm was meant to go off, so we didn't miss the boat to Ko Tao.

Last time we were in Thailand we joked that you could walk into any building in Chiang Mai and be offered a massage, laundry service, or cooking classes. Here in Ko Tao I think you can get scuba lessons or a tattoo in any building you enter. We are here for the former. Ko Tao certifies more scuba divers than any other location save one in Australia, evidently because it's cheap and has fantastic diving at beginner depths.

Today we watched some learning videos and were introduced to the equipment. We like our instructor, a man from Leeds who packed in his dead-end job 6 years ago to travel in southeast Asia and basically never left. Like me and Qatar, I guess, only in awesomer environs.

I'm slowly getting used to typing on my ipod. Is there a shortcut for apostrophes? Can I just type I'm or i'd and have it autocorrect? Yes, I can!

Well, I think that suffices for now. Tonight there's a festival going on celebrating environmental awareness. Should be fun or, as justin points out, at least less disturbing than our last Thai festival (the goretastic Phuket Vegetarian Festival). Will try to post this tonight or tomorrow morning from a restaurant with wifi.

Update, 6:45 pm. I'm used to living with geckos, but you should see the one that lives behind our dresser! He's over a foot long. That tells you how many mosquitoes there are in here for him to fatten himself on! Go, gecko, go!

Update, 7:10pm. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD THE SIZE OF THE SPIDERS!!!!!!!!
