Doha's Museum of Islamic Art opened last weekend to great fanfare. The Qatari government has been planning this museum since before we moved here, and it was supposed to open in time for the Asian Games in 2006.

I cracked up at I.M. Pei's assessment of Doha, in a NYT article:
"Doha in many ways is virginal. There is no real context there, no real life unless you go into the souk. I had to create my own context."

The emir must have loved that quote, given that the point of the museum is to establish Doha as a cultural center.

The most hilariously written coverage of the event was doubtless the Qatar Tribune, whose headline proudly proclaimed: "Museum of Islamic Art: A metaphor for magnificence"

My coworkers and I have been enjoying actually using "Museum of Islamic Art" as a metaphor for magnificence, as in: "This hummus is pretty Museum of Islamic Art!"
