Handing in my feminist card
Jun. 2nd, 2005 11:15 pmThis afternoon at work, a mouse ran towards me, and I leapt onto a chair.
It's OK, you can mock me. (In my defense, it was only because I was barefoot. But really, did I think an escaping mouse was going to stop to munch on my toes on its way to its next hiding place?) Still, the chair-jumping wasn't nearly as humiliating as the girly shriek I emitted when I felt a phantom mouse touch my foot later in the day. So much for female empowerment. I make Rosie the Riveter cry.
In more cheerful feminist news: last night's Doha Debate, on the topic "This House believes that Arab women should have full equality with men," resulted in the first landslide vote we've seen at the debates. Something like 85% of the audience voted that Arab women SHOULD have full equality. And even the debaters against the motion believed that women should be equal before the law, and spent their debate time engaging in really irritating sophistry about the meaning of the word "equality." Plus, our dean was accused on international television of NOT LACTATING, and that's gotta be worth something. ;-)
You can watch it yourself on BBC World, Saturday June 11 at 12:10 a.m. and 7:10 p.m. GMT and Sunday June 12 at 7:10 a.m. and 5:10 p.m. GMT. If I'm subtracting correctly, in California that will be Friday at 4:10 p.m., Saturday at 11:10 a.m. and 11:10 p.m. and Sunday at 9:10 p.m.
Update: Peninsula article on the debate
