Someday my prince will come
Jan. 5th, 2005 10:49 amThe heir apparent, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is getting married on Saturday. The wedding actually seems to be taking place here at Education City; there are suddenly a large number of enormous tents everywhere. I wish I knew more about Qatari marriage customs, but all I know is (a) large quantities of henna are involved and (b) there are separate celebrations for women and men. Unfortunately our invitation seems to have gotten lost in the mail (to quote our neighbor), so I am not likely to know anything more about marriage customs next week.
The bride-to-be is Sheikha Jawaher Al Thani, daughter of the Minister of State. Coincidentally, the Minister of State is named His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani, which means that both of the newlyweds' fathers are named Hamad Al Thani. That could get confusing. Why is it royals always have fewer names to choose from than the rest of us?
EDIT: Apparently there is a tent for each tribe of Qatar. Each of them will have a presence at the wedding, and as part of the ceremonies the emir and heir apparent will go visit each one.
