Year-in-Review Meme

because everybody else is doing it... Here's the first sentence or two from the first post I wrote each month in 2006.

January: Happy New Year, everyone! Justin's suggestion of an Oz-themed gingerbread house turns out to have been prescient, as Humboldt County has been hit by a big storm with hurricane-force winds.

February: "We like him [Clinton]. All Arabs like him. But I hate George Bush and all Arabs hate him."

March: There are two interesting conferences going on in Doha right now. One is on human rights in the Arab world; the other is on women in the Arab world.

April: Happiness is over 200 new posts on my LJ friends page.

May: This week, Qatar's National Human Rights Committee released their first major report, which is shockingly candid about human rights abuses in Qatar -- abuses which the report warns "impair the reputation of the State at the international level."

June: Sheikh Jassem Al-Mutawah explains the difference between men and women, using modern computer software.

July: Last night we got an e-mail from a colleague telling us that one of our students, Fahad Al-Jefairi, was killed yesterday in a car accident in Saudi.

August: The publication that's printing my article requested pictures of the authors.

September: This morning's Peninsula reports that 764 expatriates lost their jobs last year due to Qatarization.

October: This makes for a very boring LJ entry, but I think it bears saying anyway: I am really quite happy.

November: The Doha Debate I attended earlier this week will be broadcast on BBC World this weekend at the following times:

December: Today marks the beginning of the Asian Games, for which Doha has been gearing up for literally years.
