Since Kafka and To Kill a Mockingbird are included, the definition doesn't seem to be derived from literary writers of England. I think it would be worthwhile to include at least a small selection of post-colonial literature (like Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart). If my memory of that book serves me correctly, it would be an interesting juxtaposition with Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (though a book centered around a crisis of faith in a student might stir up uncomfortable discussions). I need to go browse my bookshelves some more and will come back and post again. ...I will never recommend Moby Dick!
